Is it cheaper to have a baby without insurance??!!?

Okay, I am only 7 weeks pregnant now and I DO have insurance. I currently have IHC select med, my payments are $360 a month and I have a $6500 maternity deductible! UGH! Now, my question is… Would it be cheaper to just have a baby and pay in cash? I know the hospitals here in SLC Ut. give a really big discount for private payers because they don’t have to go through the insurance company. Usually about 50% off! And I have had 3 kids, all natural and healthy. I go home after 24 hrs exactly. I know not every birth and baby is the same but my odds are pretty good. I have called the hospital where I have my kids and have not been able to get a straight answer, just a lot of “I don’t knows” and “let me transfer you’s”. Any advise? Has anyone paid for a delivery cash and how much was it in the end? If you have any questions feel free to ask.

It’s not a risk I would dare take. I’d rather pay out a couple extra grand on the front than risk thousands more if I ended up paying for everything out of pocket in the event of a major issue.

This is what I found via Google. I assumed you’d be in labor 5 hours, and then in recovery 19 hours:

Fetal Monitor Per Hour$66 5hrs = $330
Labor Room Per Hour $114 5hrs = $570
Pulse Oximetry Monitor (Mother)$66 5 hrs = $330
Recovery Care Per Hour – Del$229 19 hrs = $4,351
Subtotal $5,581

Unscheduled C-Section$3,936 Grand total: $9,517
Vaginal Delivery $2,814 Grand total: $8,395
Cesearean Section $3,633 Grand total: $9,214
